Every Day Counts: Girls who have courage

Every Day Counts: Girls who have courage

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)

Life is often described as being a journey with various phrases such as ‘Life is a beautiful ride’ or ‘On life’s journey it’s okay to ask for directions’, the list goes on! As poetic and pretty as they look printed on canvas, hanging in our homes – not forgetting on our Instagram feeds, what does the reality of a journey require from us?

Maybe life isn’t a journey, maybe life is a voyage. The word voyage means ‘a course of travel or passage, especially a long journey by water, to a distant place.’  Two phrases to make your favourites are: ‘by water’ and ‘distant place’.

‘Distant place’ could mean recognising our destination; though our eyes only see one day at a time. And where would we be without ‘water’: the water that fills the oceans allowing us to sail away? In other words, water is blessing. Look out for the rain; rain brings the blessings that ultimately carry you along, leading you forward on your voyage.

A voyage with an unknown destination can be scary. Naturally, we all feel a need to see what is far, far away into our future. However, not knowing our destination opens a beautiful space for faith. Irene Howat wrote these words in a book called ‘Ten Girls Who Changed the World’‘Buy yourself a ticket for as far away as you can afford and get off where the Lord tells you to’. What a brilliant example of the courageous fight between our logic and our faith.

It takes courage to do what others may see as impossible or to go against what is expected of us. But hear this: God calls you to be courageous and believes in you more than words can express. The amazing thing about our lives is that wherever we end up God will send the rain. You are on a voyage, and your voyage is one that can never overwhelm you. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Set your sights not on how far your eyes cannot see, but on the blessings He will place beneath every footstep of faith you make.

Your courageous voyage could make you a girl who changes the world!

Challenge

Write down a list of the longings of your heart, your ambitions and wishes. The things that seem impossible, but nevertheless are your dreams and destinations that you would like to see. Pray the prayer of Serenity over them: ‘Lord, help me to accept the things I cannot change, give me courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference’.
