Shine Bright: It's What's Inside That Counts
How has Week One of your new term started? Katrina is here to kick off Week Two in the best way possible: encouraging you to pursue knowledge of Jesus in every corner of your life. L x
“A PERSON WHO HAS GOOD THOUGHTS CANNOT EVER BE UGLY. IF YOU HAVE GOOD THOUGHTS THEY WILL SHINE OUT OF YOUR FACE LIKE SUNBEAMS AND YOU WILL ALWAYS LOOK LOVELY.”
- THE TWITS, ROALD DAHL
I love this quote from Roald Dahl and I think there’s something to be said for its application to the Bible too. 1 Samuel 16:7 says:
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
If we are looking to shine for Jesus, the Bible tells us we have to start with our hearts, the core of our being (Proverbs 4:23). Growing our heart means filling it to the brim with Jesus. This doesn’t mean just knowing facts about him, but really knowing him. The same way, when you are best friends with someone, you know the way that they speak and write, the kind of promises they make and if they stick to them and all their little habits and quirks. Jesus wants to us to know Him like that but even more intimately.
When we accept Jesus as King of our lives, it is like a little fire is lit within us. The more we stoke up that fire and fill out hearts with knowing Jesus, the brighter our light shines. Jesus says we should...
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
So by sharing our hearts and the light inside them, we can lead people to know God too. Although to some people these might be obvious, these are my top pointers for filling your heart with Jesus…
1) Time well spent.
Read your Bible, there is so much juicy stuff in there just waiting to be found out!
2) Listen out.
My prayer life is often full of requests and me talking but it is when we sit quietly before God that we really hear what he is trying to tell us.
3) The Holy Spirit.
Don’t resist God’s spirit that wants to work within you, if you feel God prompting you to read something, pray something or say something then go for it!
4) Don’t go it alone:
I learn so much about Jesus from other people. Sometimes it is a friend sharing what they have learnt that really hooks me, other times it is going to church or listening to a sermon online, maybe it is reading a More Precious post! Being a Christian means being part of a community so ask for help, prayer or knowledge from others.
Here's to a year well spent, getting to know Jesus intimately - from the inside, out!
