Fresh Kindness: It's A Priority

Fresh Kindness: It's A Priority

Last week we thought about how we can develop a lifestyle of gratitude, rather than just a few one-off actions of thankfulness. This week we’re thinking about kindness and what it means to be a girl who loves and prioritises kindness – just like our Father in Heaven. Happy Monday!

SHE OPENS HER MOUTH WITH WISDOM, AND THE TEACHING OF KINDNESS IS ON HER TONGUE. (PROVERBS 31:26)

DON'T EVER FORGET KINDNESS AND TRUTH. DON’T LET LOYALTY AND FAITHFULNESS ABANDON YOU. WEAR THEM LIKE A NECKLACE. WRITE THEM ON YOUR HEART AS IF ON A TABLET. (PROVERBS 3:3)

I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of the girls who read More Precious – and I can confirm that the vast majority of you are all incredibly nice. Girls who are wonderful friends. Girls who make brilliant sisters. Girls who would give a friend an Instagram like if she’s stuck in single figures...

And usually if we’re fairly nice, it’s easy to think that we’re therefore kind by default. This is logical – kindness is just the loveliest word, I always think; conjuring up a mix of Beatrix Potter, my Granny, or the old man who helped me when I fell over in the snow (/just fell over) last week…

But there’s more to kindness than just being nice.

THE VERSES ABOVE ASK US TO PURSUE THE TEACHING OF KINDNESS, TO WEAR KINDNESS AND KEEP IT CLOSE TO OUR HEARTS. WE’RE BEING ASKED HERE TO FOLLOW A LIFESTYLE OF KINDNESS, WHERE WE PUT OURSELVES SECOND AND PUT OTHERS FIRST.

In school, university and especially in the world of work, the message is often that we should look out for ourselves first and that we shouldn’t waste time being kind to people who don’t return it. This is where God’s way of life for us is countercultural yet again: the scriptures lay out a lifestyle where we are called to be kind in all circumstances; practicing kindness as our default response, even when people are difficult or hurt us.

Rooting ourselves in the Bible will make sure we stay refreshed to be consciously pursuing kindness at all times – because busy routines can often make us distracted or more irritable, forgetting that kindness is something God loves and prioritises for us. We've only touched the surface today but why not read up on kindness and where the Bible mentions it?

Let’s begin this week with a prayer for God to soften our hearts, to give us the gift of kindness in our speech, thoughts, actions and responses so that we become extravagant in the way we give out kindness to everyone we encounter.

Not so that we can continue to be ‘nice’, but so that we can follow the way of God – who loves kindness. Isn’t that something to aim for?

AND WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE OF YOU BUT TO DO JUSTICE, TO LOVE KINDNESS, AND TO WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD? (MICAH 6:8)
