Love Came Down: Rejoicing Like The Shepherds

Love Came Down: Rejoicing Like The Shepherds

The run up to Christmas is possibly the most exciting time of the year. Festive markets, cinnamon spiced drinks, Michael Buble’s reappearance on the radio, what’s not to love? It’s so easy to get caught up in all the carol singing, mince pie eating and decorating that we often forget the true joy of Christmas.

But the true joy of Christmas is when we see the power and grace of God placed into the world as a tiny baby. Jesus’s birth deserves the biggest celebration ever, and not just at Christmas but all year round!

The Shepherds are a perfect example of the joy we should feel because of Jesus Christ. After hearing the good news of Jesus’s birth from the angels, despite being terrified of the heavenly host, they leave their flocks and go to Bethlehem to see the baby which the angels have told them about. I don’t know about you, but I am amazed by this instant trust and conviction that they have in Jesus, and want to try and have this enthusiasm for the word of God throughout the year.

‘When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.’ (Luke 2:17-20)

Not only do the Shepherds praise God for the birth of Jesus, but they spread the good news too! I know I find this really difficult, especially after the novelty of Christmas has worn off.

But isn’t this such a great reminder of the wonderful news we can spread throughout the year? God provided for us the promised Son, so that he could come into the world as a baby, and live like us until the day came for him to sacrifice his life so that we can live eternally with him. What an incredible message this is!

So keep this in mind this season: the joy of Christmas is truly that we no longer need to fear death, because Christ came down to save us.

And maybe as we return to school or work or university after the holidays, we could speak to our friends about his amazing news. Rather than just saying that your holidays were ‘fine’ and it was ‘nice to see the family’, perhaps take note from the delight of the Shepherds.

BE JOYOUS IN THE GOOD NEWS THAT THE CHRISTMAS STORY BRINGS TO ALL OF US, BECAUSE JESUS’S ARRIVAL IS DEFINITELY WORTH CELEBRATING ALL YEAR ROUND.
