† = ♥ | Why Good Friday is an understatement

I love this image because, without using any words, it sums up what today, Good Friday, is all about:

Good Friday was the day that Jesus went to the cross. The day that the perfect son of God died for the sins of the world. The blameless son of God suffered the most painful death ever, and experienced separation from his Father. The only man who ever lived a fully perfect and sinless life took all our shame and guilt on himself.

Why? Because of LOVE. The Cross is all about love. God is love. His love for us is so great, that He sent his perfect son to the most terrible death, that even he didn't want to endure, so that we might be fully reconciled to God and can be called his daughters.

The amazing truth of the Cross is that when God looks at us now, he doesn't look at our sin and shame. Instead he sees us as perfect because Jesus already paid the price for our sin.

I think if I'm honest, I find this difficult to really accept. I'm so aware that I mess up, that I treat people badly, that I'm jealous of other people's lives, when I let others down - again and again. Why would God love me? I often find it hard to love myself. It's so easy to think that we are too bad for God, because we know what we are really like. We know our lives aren't ones of integrity, we don't love others more than ourselves, and we do the same wrong things time after time.

On the cross, Jesus declared the words: "it is finished". By saying this, he declared that the penalty for all our sin has been paid. He wiped the slate completely clean. He declared that all of the things we have done wrong are dealt with, they are in the past. God looks at them no more.

He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. ‭Psalm‬ ‭103‬:‭12‬

Good Friday is the amazing reason why when we do things wrong, God still runs towards us with opens arms. The love of God that was poured out on the Cross is the reason why our performance doesn't matter. We aren't saved by how hard we try, or by how many times we prayed this week, or how many old ladies we help across the road. Christianity isn't about scoring points on a leaderboard or keeping a list of rules. It's about accepting the amazing gift of God's love.

His love is relentless, overwhelming and boundless. Nothing can separate us from it.

We are daughters of God, who are loved immeasurably more than we could even dare to dream. We are truly precious, which is sometimes so hard to even fathom but is such a wonderful truth! Let's celebrate Good Friday today by praying that God would help us grasp this incredible love more fully, and that he would help us know more fully that we are dearly loved daughters of the King.

For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty Saviour. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. (Zephaniah‬ ‭3:17)
