Every Day Counts: Girls who are not alone

Today we welcome another new writer to the troops – Lucy's cousin Kate! Kate brings us some great truths for us to keep in our minds as we go through the highs and lows of life. We can be confident every day that we are not alone, and never will be. What a promise! Lx

Have you ever felt alone? Perhaps lying awake at night longing for the sleep you badly need, whilst the rest of the house is silent and dark. Or maybe you have had the tormenting experience of having to queue for lunch at school on you own, watching everyone around you with their friends, trying to not be seen to be alone by the ‘popular group’.

These are fairly trivial examples, but nonetheless, loneliness is something we have probably all felt at some point in our lives, I know that I have. However, as Christians we can know that we are not alone, for Christ is with us.

There are many examples in the Bible where God has made promises to his people that he is with them, for example in Deuteronomy chapter 31:6, when God tells Joshua not to be afraid because he has promised to be with him in the task he has given him:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them,
for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

And in Psalm 23, David says he will not fear evil because he knows that his God is with him:

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,
For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

This is a fantastic truth! God is with his people, by his Spirit, no matter where they are or what time of the day or night it is, God is by our side, guiding us every step of the way. If you’re anything like me, this is easy to forget in everyday life when you are feeling down or alone and your natural instinct may not be to pray. But as Christians we are privileged to be able to pray to our Father in heaven, and when we are lonely, there is no better person to talk to than the One who created us in his image and sent his son to die for us on a cross, so that we can have eternal life with him.

Sometimes as Christians we will feel lonely and different to our friends who aren’t Christians, but be encouraged because Romans 8 tells us that “the Spirit of God lives in you”: we are not alone. God sent the Holy Spirit to live within us and to guide us in his way, so that we can grow day by day to be more like Jesus.

When times are tough and it seems like the whole world is against us, we know that God, the creator of everything, is with us; just as Paul tells us in Romans “If God is for us, who can be against us?” This is a brilliant truth that as Christians we must treasure in our hearts, and when we are lonely, we must remember and pray to our Father in heaven and trust that he is with us.

Write out one of these verses on a piece of card and stick it to your mirror so that every day you can be reminded of this amazing truth!

I live and go to school in London. I am doing my GCSE’s this year. I love baking, long walks and spending time with my friends. My favourite time of year is on camp in the summer when I can have fun with my friends and read God’s word.
