Good morning girls; it's February 13th and we're ready for a week of special content surrounding Valentine's Day! Today we're looking at love as a choice, not just a feeling. Enjoy...
“FOR IN CHRIST JESUS NEITHER CIRCUMCISION NOR UNCIRCUMCISION HAS ANY VALUE. THE ONLY THING THAT COUNTS IS FAITH EXPRESSING ITSELF THROUGH LOVE. YOU WERE RUNNING A GOOD RACE. WHO CUT IN ON YOU AND KEPT YOU FROM OBEYING THE TRUTH?” GALATIANS 5: 6-7 (NIV)
Love, love, love.
Jesus talks about love again and again in the scriptures: the very fact that He deigned to come to earth and die on a cross for our wrongdoing was an act of pure love. Consequently, he asks us to love.
Initially, this doesn’t seem too hard: I know that I love chocolate, and I love my friends. I love running in the rain (strange, I know), and I love reading books. But when it comes to that real, tough, put-your-own-desires-aside kind of love, that doesn’t always come so easily. The kind of love that leads to forgiveness, the kind of love that sees beyond the hurt and tries to understand the person that God himself made – that kind of love is a challenge, and one we have to commit to every single day.
Further in Galatians 5, the Bible says,
“BUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS LOVE, JOY, PEACE PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND SELF-CONTROL. AGAINST SUCH THINGS THERE IS NO LAW.” GALATIANS 5: 22-23 (NIV)
That there is no law against them tells us that we can practise each of these loving virtues freely – there is no restriction on how kind you can be, no limit to how gentle you can be with someone. That they come from the Spirit lets us know that we can find these things in abundance from our God. Jesus doesn’t just talk about love, but He assures us that we can be given the energy and the strength to love through Him.
Some very wise friends of mine always tell me that love is a choice. To love people is God’s heart, and just as we have to choose to follow Him every day, so we must renew our promise to do our best, and love on the people around us.
So today, I encourage you to pray for the strength to love even through the hardest of circumstances, even if you have to pray for a renewal of that endurance ten times a day.
LOVE IS A CHOICE. THIS IS YOUR MISSION – CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT.
Emily has grown up in Cambridge and is in her second term studying Arabic at Oxford. She loves the freedom that comes from stepping out into God’s calling for her life, whatever that may look like, knowing there is no limit to the reach of His plans. She gets super excited by God’s infinite love and grace, as well as chocolate, puppies and exploring new cities.
